Does Medicare cover physio at home?

The short answer

Partly. If your GP has given you a chronic condition management plan and referred you for physio, Medicare pays a rebate of $63.40 on up to 5 allied health visits each calendar year. Our 30-minute visits are $120, so you pay a gap of about $57 after the rebate.

Who can use it.

  • People with a chronic condition (one that has lasted, or is likely to last, six months or more) whose GP has made a chronic condition management plan

What it costs.

30-minute visit $120 · Medicare rebate $63.40 · your gap about $57.

You can use a 45-minute visit too ($170, a gap of about $107).

The 5 visits a year are shared across all allied health, such as physio, podiatry and dietetics.

Medicare doesn't pay for missed visits.

About referrals.

Your GP's referral doesn't need to name us, and it lasts 18 months.

How to start.

  1. Ask your GP about a chronic condition management plan and a referral for physio.
  2. Request a home visit and tell us you have a care plan.
  3. Have the referral ready for your first visit, or ask your GP to send it to us.

Common questions.

No. A GP's referral under a chronic condition management plan doesn't need to name a physio, so you can bring one you already have.

You can keep going privately, and claim on your health fund if your extras cover includes physio. Your 5 Medicare visits start again on 1 January.

No. Each visit is claimed through Medicare or your health fund, not both. We'll help you choose the better option.
